I went to see my family physician in town and after examination, she made a referral to get further tests. Being in a smaller community where you really are a face rather than a number, gives peace of mind that you don’t need to go far to get quality care especially when the scariest moments in life happen. Little things like this can help make a difference in relieving the stress of scary situations. After a series of ultrasounds, mammograms, MRI’s, and finally biopsies, I found out that I had breast cancer in August. Thankfully, further tests showed that the cancer had not spread elsewhere in my body except a lymph node. “Over the past 3 ½ years, I’ve been in a battle to stay healthy and fight the cancer that was discovered. I went through chemotherapy treatments every 3 weeks (Sept. 2018 – Dec. 2018), along with targeted drugs (administered by port or IV) every 3 weeks (Sept. 2018 – Sept. 2019). Then next steps included surgery, radiation, and hormone blocking therapy. I had a double mastectomy in February 2019 in Madison followed by daily radiation for 4 weeks. Continue the story to page 2.
